Software for Satellite Laser & QKD Communications

QRBIT develops software for designing and optimizing free-space optical and quantum communication missions. Built on years of research at NTUA’s Photonics Communications Research Laboratory and validated against experimental satellite data, our tools model the full link, from orbit and atmosphere to telescope, detector and protocol, so teams can assess feasibility before building hardware.

QRBITLink – Satellite QKD Mission Planning
Our flagship platform, QRBITLink, is a web-based link budget and mission planning tool for satellite-to-ground QKD, developed under ESA BIC Greece. Configure the orbit, ground station, payload, channel and protocol, and get the secret key rate, QBER and distilled key volume for every satellite pass.

  • Satellites: any active satellite tracked from up-to-date orbital data (LEO, MEO, GEO), or your own elevation profile
  • Ground stations: built-in OGS catalogue, or any location worldwide with custom telescope specifications
  • Atmospheric modelling: geometric and pointing loss, clear-sky absorption, turbulence and background noise
  • Receiver: SPAD, SNSPD or custom detectors at 1550 nm and 810 nm, with single-mode fiber coupling and adaptive-optics correction
  • Protocols: efficient decoy-state BB84 with finite-key analysis, with entanglement-based BBM92 coming soon
  • Forecasting: 5-day pass forecast with per-pass SKR, QBER, distilled key volume and AES-256 key count, with cloud-coverage and solar/lunar noise forecasting coming soon
  • Outputs: 40+ inputs and 25+ outputs, with a results dashboard and downloadable CSV and PDF reports

Applications range from QKD payload and ground-station design to link performance forecasting and EuroQCI space-segment planning. Extensions for classical laser communications and integration with ground-station control software are on our roadmap. Our tools are designed for system integrators, mission planners, researchers and operators, and they speed up deployment, improve reliability and support mission success.
